During the Los Angeles Chargers’ penultimate preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, wide receiver Quentin Johnston took a huge hit and suffered a concussion on Saturday.
In the first minute of play at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the Chargers wide receiver needed the cart to leave the field. Down the sideline, Johnston ran a go route. Rams cornerback AJ Green tipped a throw to him from Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
Rams safety Tanner Ingle clocked Johnston as he attempted to retrieve the tipped ball. After sustaining the heavy blow, he laid still on the ground and assumed a fencing position.

As he was carried inside the tube, Johnston appeared stunned. The fact that he was able to leave the field without the use of a stretcher was a significant plus for Chargers supporters.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Chargers subsequently acknowledged that Johnston had sustained a concussion and was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
Johnston was crucial to the Chargers’ success the previous season. The TCU product recorded 55 receptions for 711 yards and a team-high 8 receiving touchdowns during his second NFL season.
There was some positive news for the Chargers’ wideout room on Saturday.
KeAndre Lambert-Smith, a rookie wide receiver, replaced Johnston and scored 37 yards on a few big plays. However, the highlight of the game was a 66-yard punt return score from an undrafted Chargers rookie.
